Around Our Town: Ñews from the Neighborhood

Basketball: The undefeated Pocho High Fighting Santos meet the Chupacabras of Don Fernando Valley High for the state hoops semifinals next week in Rancho Cucamonga. Booster Club president Cal Ifas wants to remind fans the vuvuzelas have arrived and you can pick up your order at his auto upholstery shop weekdays and Saturdays. Califas Tuck y Roll is in the Pocho Industrial Park behind the Tapatio plant.

Tourism: The El Rancho Pocho Downtown Historical District has once again garnered a mention in Zagat’s Off the Beaten Path Travel Guide: “A sketchy tattoo parlor, Lupe’s Mistic Yerberia and a car battery recycling joint take you back to an earlier time, a time that wasn’t really all that good, actually, but if that’s what you’re looking for, the El Rancho Pocho Downtown Historical District has it all.”

Sidewalk Art Show: Children with big eyes painted on velvet, misshapen sand candles, derivative pastiches of better-known artists and poorly-executed decorative sculptures will be on display at the Pocho Estates Annual Spring Art Show this Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Ritchie Valens Boulevard will be closed to traffic between Pachuco Plaza on the west to Zoot Zocalo to the east. Art show organizer Pedo Picasso wants to remind neighbors that dogs — even dogs on leashes — are prohibited from the show, on account of that unfortunate incident last year with the bulldog and the “little person” working the face-painting for kiddies booth.

Not So School : Parents with kids in Manila Envelopé Middle School should have received email about the lockdown instituted after someone hacked into the school’s network and “defaced” the Facebook page of school principal Maria Malinche. Students will not be allowed to take their MacBooks home until whoever did this steps forward on his or her own, Malinche tells this columnist. The principal’s Facebook relationship status was changed from “It’s Complicated” to “It’s Puro Perverted” without her consent.
