Justice Sotomayor: Tea, justice and Spanglish on Sesame Street

by Comic Saenz on February 8, 2012 in Cultura, Video

New Sesame Street video features Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor serving up Spanglish, tea, and justice in the case of Goldilocks v. Bear. Actually, it’s cafecito, but ‘tea’ makes the headline fit.

Very cute, but where was the Spanglish? (I just finished watching Q’ Viva! on the DVR and Jennifer Lopez speaks puro Spanglish.)

” There are thought two phenomena of Spanglish, which are borrowing and code-switching. English borrowed words will usually be adapted to Spanish phonology. Code-Switching and Code-Mixing on the other hand is commonly used by bilinguals. Code-switching means that a person will begin a sentence in one language and at a certain point this one will begin speaking in another language. This switch will occur at the beginning of a sentence or a new topic. In code-mixture this change in language will occur at any given time with no regard to the beginning of a sentence or topic.” Cafecito, professor? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanglish
