Mexican garbage men perfect low-impact trash collection (video)

(PNS reporting from GUANAJUATO, MX) Trash collectors in the high-technology “Silicon Barrio” here have perfected a new technique for picking up basura that is greener and faster than traditional methods.

As this demo video shows, drivers in León never stop and re-start their trucks — which would mean wasted fuel and extra airborne pollution. Instead, they rely on inertia to keep the trucks on the route and advanced ballistics to perfect the trajectories that move the soft trash containers into the truck’s cavernous interior with a minimum of effort.

“Trash ain’t nothin’ but cash,” explains city trash master Raul Chorrero. “The faster you pick it up, the more you can gather, and the more can you gather, the more customers you can get. Volume. Volume. Volume. That’s the name of the game.”

The technique was developed by Adiós Basura Apestosa (ABA), a Leon startup, with logistical and financial assistance from the Guanajuato Research Consortium, a non-profit tech incubator.

ABA is one of the startup firms lured to Guanajuato by Gov. Alejandro Ramirez Sanchez de Bernstein, as he works to broaden the region’s economy. Until recently, the area was dependent on the sale of Guanajuato’s primary exports, guano and juato.
