Stereotype much? TV spot for Spectrum cable’s Mi Plan has ’em all

by ADDISON AVENUE on July 11, 2017 in Cultura

Hot sexy salsa dancers! A party — or is it a fiesta? Hopping lowriders! Flags of many nations! Something for the kids! Did Charter/Spectrum/TimeWarner/RoadRunner miss any Latinx cliches?

We asked our favorite ad maven Bernadette Rivero what was missing and what was happening in this spot:

“Missing?” she emailed back. “An abuela kicking a soccer ball with her feet while batting a piñata with one hand and making a call to Latin America.”

Who’s the singer?

AUDREY RUIZ July 24, 2017 at 1:37 PM

The singer is not even latina she is a Bollywood star in india.
The voice was dubbed.
Crazy right?

Lynn August 1, 2017 at 5:00 PM

I am so offended! Singing, dancing with wind blown hair, in English or Espanol! Dancing, low riders….ugh…

Patricia August 9, 2017 at 6:29 PM

I figured that she wasn’t Latina what is her name. Trying to prove a point to soneone.

R July 12, 2017 at 7:51 PM

WTF? Spectrum, you are officially registered as dupe when it comes to cultural sensitivity. Hope your business model dies.
Sincerely, a deeply offended person

I enjoy this commercial…

Soy Tejas July 21, 2017 at 10:40 AM

I scramble to change the channel as soon as this POS commercial starts.

Ivan July 22, 2017 at 9:05 AM

Shame on spectrum for this commercial. They need to get their money back from whatever ad agency they used to produce this POS. Who is running Spectrum’s marketing division? What ever nitwit is head of marketing, I hope he/she is fired and never, ever, ever, gets a job.

Joshua R Smith July 24, 2017 at 7:42 AM

I just watched the commercial and immediately googled racist spectrum commercial and found this, lol. I not offended, maybe because I’m white, but there were some serious stereotypes in it. WTF?

SpectrumSux July 29, 2017 at 1:31 PM

Most Hispanics are White (Caucasian) and others of other races with latin ethnicity of different backgrounds, educational, economic, religion, languages, careers, talents, heights, weight, eye, hair and skin color.

I agree that this commercial is completely offensive, lacks cultural sensitivity because of the inappropriate stereotype with assumed accents, awful music, misrepresented flags, sexist as exploiting women and their bodies, and worse thinking audiences can be so ignorant to not pick up on the stereotypes while magically being drawn to the playing of upbeat music, colors, and offers (wow!).

You don’t have to be Hispanic to be offended. This is not the only inappropriate Spectrum commercial – there are several others that have been released that make me wonder.

I’m definitely ending my business with Spectrum and encourage others to do the same. As TWC, it was tolerable because the only cable in our area with no other form of entertainment and now as Spectrum, convinced time to move on to newer options! It’s like living again (upbeat music playing in the background) and saving $$$.

Bjorgen Eatinger August 4, 2017 at 6:04 PM

You are the first person that I’ve seen to point out correctly that “Most Hispanics are White.” I wonder why so many of them do not realize this? However, it is not about color actually, it is about CULTURE.

GeeCee July 25, 2017 at 6:45 AM

A truly cringeworthy spot. What was Spectrum thinking?

Margaret J. Vesce July 26, 2017 at 2:36 PM

Your Fiesta commercial is outstanding. Thank you so much for giving us a wake up beat, fine people enjoying themselves while selling Spectrum. About time we realized American is a mixing bowl now & always was. Chill Lax folks, enjoy this beautiful commercial. Brovo

Charlotte July 28, 2017 at 12:55 PM

Totally agreed! Love this commercial and dance. She is so lively.

Soy August 8, 2017 at 7:50 AM

Keep saving your pennies and cash the in for dollar bills. I’m sure you are a regular at local tittie bar.

Scott July 27, 2017 at 5:48 AM

Hate this commercial. Change channel when it comes on.

Alex July 27, 2017 at 12:37 PM

Interestingly they are dancing in some dirty garage, that shows no white collar Latinos with money… All just westside story barrio Latinos just happy to be dancing because the have cable TV and living with all the lowriders and motorcycles racers….totally totally pandering to a ridiculous stereotype. It was probably created by some advertising agency in Iowa. Disgraceful. Can you imagine the blowback if this was done to an African-American target audience? Ok, back to my tacos al pastor!

Dave July 31, 2017 at 6:17 AM

My first thought ,who is this Selena ripoff. I wanna turn the channel but keeping my Spectrum.

mindyabitness July 31, 2017 at 12:31 PM

Can’t wait to see what commercial they have geared for African Americans !

Insensitive MotherF*'”^rs !!

Earworm hater August 1, 2017 at 10:45 PM

Abnoxious earworm commercial, the epitome of clueless pandering/advertising. Great job, Spectrum, I now am ready to switch carriers because of this intusion in my life every day. The spot is like nails on a chalkboard. And you manage to make Latinos look desperate for any kind of technology, even your lame tv. Insulting, stupid ad.

SusieQ August 2, 2017 at 10:44 AM

Lots of inverted 666’s. 66.62 and 6662. Yuck.

Dan O. August 3, 2017 at 7:23 AM

After being pummeled by the BS commercial for the 500th time I decided to seek out who else found it obnoxiously offensive, so glad I’m not the only one.

Would have loved to have witnessed the agency meeting that led up to this masterpiece: “Let’s start by compiling a list of everything we can use to reel in the Latino market, Jorgé (pronounced George), you probably have a few ideas….”

Since I only buy internet service I constantly get cable offers that go directly in the trash, the lack of a response to these tremendous deals combined with my surname apparently means I can’t speak English since I started getting offers en Español; anybody else?

Remember when McDonald’s used to run commercials clumsily aimed at black people? Do they still do this?

Elita August 3, 2017 at 12:10 PM

The commercial is stereotypical on so many levels. Low riders? A worldwide fiesta with flashy dancing and costumes? Really?! Spectrum seems to be conveying that latinos and latinas have a limited attention span unless they can bailar. Not cool.

Rachel Reynolds August 3, 2017 at 3:56 PM

i was offended that the Mexican flag was predominantly placed in the middle surrounded by the other flags we were like WTF? Can they come up with any other ways to make us want to cancel?

David Rieks August 4, 2017 at 8:32 PM

Unlike some people who commented on this commercial, I’m not offended by the actor. She is beautiful and sexy, and no doubt that is the message Spectrum is trying get out. I am offended by the false advertising. If cable, phone, and internet service were truly $29.99 each, I would be paying $90.00 plus tax, instead of $189.00 a month. All the hidden fees triple the cost, and the service is terrible. Over a hundred channels, and nothing to watch. Out of over 100 channels, I watch maybe 10, and don’t even have some of the channels I want. I would switch to Direct TV, or some other service, but they are not really not any better. They have great introductory offers, but go up in 6 months, and cost more than cable. If I could get local network TV (I live in the country) I wouldn’t even have cable. It’s a waste of money.

Brad Hemmings August 4, 2017 at 11:41 PM

I enjoyed this commercial, the girl killed it…it has great energy

Fernando August 6, 2017 at 7:48 AM

It seems there are many high up corporate positions filled with people of Indian ethnicity. Probably not an ad agency as they have there own marketing dept. They have even jumped into bed with SAP Ariba which seems to be completely staffed by folks of the same.

Tammie Cox August 7, 2017 at 4:03 AM

This commercial is absolutely hideous, I change the channel everytime it comes on, which is quite often…please stop!!!

robert Romano August 8, 2017 at 3:14 PM

Worse commercial , or nearly worse commercial I have ever seen. What on Earth are these focus groups for if this shit. Is the best they can do. Just dropped them for Food.

robert Romano August 8, 2017 at 3:15 PM
