Small-town Oaxaca mayor marries crocodile princess for fish (video)

Brides can often get a bit snappy on their big day – and one Mexican crocodile is no exception. She’s marrying the mayor of a Pacific coast fishing town in a traditional ceremony.

The fishermen of the town of San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca, believe the crocodile is a princess, and a wedding ritual will bring plenty of fish for them to catch along the Pacific coast. And then there’s the part when the mayor talks about the parade of “morenos” bearing croc statues.

South Carolina’s Live5 CBS reports:

Mayor Joel Vasquez Rojas wed the crocodile at city hall. He then danced with it in his arms during a party packed with residents of San Pedro Huamelula in southern Mexico.

The fishermen believe the crocodile is a princess and that the wedding ritual will bring plenty of fish, shrimp and other seafood for them to catch along the Pacific Coast.

Before the ceremony, the wedding party walked with the crocodile bride through the town.

Following the marriage ceremony, the crocodile is referred to as the “wife” of the mayor.

All members of the municipal council are required to contribute to pay for the wedding festivities.

Those who don’t pay their share are fined.
