That time Woody Guthrie wrote a song about the Trumps (videos)

In December 1950, Woody Guthrie moved into the Beach Haven Apartments in Brooklyn. His landlord was Fred Trump, father of Donald. Trump’s greed and racism inspired Guthrie to write Old Man Trump.

Ryan Harvey updated that song, and made this video with Ani DiFranco and Tom Morello (RATM).

Here are the lyrics:

🇲🇽 ❤️ 🇮🇪

This corrido by Orange County Celtic-rock homies The Fenians tells the tragic story of the San Patricios, the St. Patrick’s Battalion.

The unit of 200 mostly Catholic Irish immigrants deserted the United States Army and fought with the Mexican Army against the U.S.A. in the Mexican–American War.

Scots-British post-punk The Wakes Band offer their version of the story next. The video’s not much to look at but the lyrics are killer, so read along below:

I didn’t know I was a poor Mexican until the day I started junior high

salomon_y_carmenWhen you grow up in a segregated community and poor, often times, you’re not aware of your ethnicity and class status. Growing up in tight-knit Mexican communities, from Tijuana, Mexico, to East Los Angeles, I didn’t realize that I was Mexican and poor until my first day of junior high school.

As part of federal integration programs, I — along with classmates from Murchison Elementary School in East Los Angeles — was bused to Mt. Gleason Jr. High School in Sunland-Tujunga. Nervous about leaving the notorious Ramona Gardens housing project or Big Hazard projects for a strange place, I braced myself for the unknown.

Fans furious as SiriusXM deports 80% of Latin music channels

siriusenglishbigIs SiriusXM ignorant, or racist, or both?

That’s the question burning up the social media as the Latin music community reacts to the satellite channel’s dropping 8 out of 10 Latin music streams.

Fox News Latino reports:

With little notice to listeners, labels or artists over the last few months, SiriusXM has eliminated eight out of 10 of its Latin music channels on their satellite platform.

And now some Latino civil rights groups are blasting the decision.

Driving While Hispanic? In Kentucky that’s ‘probable cause’ (video)

In Kentucky, aka KY, the state with the same initials as a popular personal lubricant, County Attorney John K. Carter says being Hispanic is reason enough for a motorist to be pulled over by police in Oldham County. In open court. With video rolling. And the defense attorney pretends she didn’t hear that, just like the lady judge didn’t hear that either. That’s why they need the KY.

After all, only 1.3% of the county is Hispanic, so who even cares? And why are they here in this posh Louisville suburb anyhow? Hispanics be like lazy, collecting welfare and food stamps, speaking Espanish and stealing jobs from white people, am I right?

“Oh no, I di-int,” Prosecutor Carter esplained later [paraphrase], according to The Courier Journal:
