It would be no exaggeration to say that 2020 has been a year that has shaken up our daily routines.
I concluded, for example, that I need to push harder with my art, my job, and my message. That push became real with the creation of my Barrio Watch line.
A satirical take on the “Neighborhood Watch” signs seen during the 80’s and 90’s, the Barrio Watch logo serves as a warning sign to white supremacists, reminding them that our barrios and hoods are keeping an eye on them. In the dawn of the Ku Klux Klan, minorities feared their night raids. Today, the tables have turned.
Mucho, mucho amor!
I finally saw Ozomatli perform in my San Diego barrio Friday, after years of declaring that I wouldn’t miss their next show. (Shoutout to Barrio Network for the tickets.)
I was already expecting a great show from this band I have been following for years, and was extra stoked since we would be treated with their new single Libertad.
The venue was crowded, everyone in attendance was eager to see the Ozos perform. (Boss man Lalo had told me that the band’s live performances do not disappoint, and indeed it was a riot to see them live.
Noticing the reactions of the crowd around me, Ozomatli’s music resonated with them at a personal level.
For me, hearing Cut Chemist Suite, Cumbia de los Muertos, and Saturday Night took me back to the days where I dreamed about the life I currently have.
They came, on Saturday, they saw, and they were escorted out, as the home team chanted “fuera”… Once again.
Attempting to re- ignite the alt-right revolution with greasy pizza, local hater Roger Ogden and the Border Town Patriots, Inc. (sic) came down to San Diego’s Chicano Park to host “Patriot Picnic 2.0” promising to bring in a large number of supporters — all 25 of them — to stand up against the hundreds from the Chicano Park Autodefensa.
Unlike their response during the first confrontation last October, San Diego Police Department closed Logan Avenue and placed barricades, insuring that both “Patriots” and Autodefensa members remained separate (keeping the “Patriots” enclosed for a few hours until once again escorted out by SDPD).
