La Cucaracha y Mas
Happy Birthday to cartoonist Sergio Aragones
It’s Sergio Aragones birthday!
He is the world’s fastest and funniest cartoonist, and a really nice guy!
I am proud to say this most macho and mustachioed Spaniard (and honorary Mexican) is a colleague and friend I first met in cartoonist circles, and of course see at San Diego ComicCon, where he is lauded as a god.
Breaking: New stamp honors Hispanic Heritage Month
(PNS reporting from WASHINGTON, DC) The U.S. Postal Service has released a new stamp to mark Hispanic Heritage Month 2013, which begins September 15.
The El Borracho stamp kicks off the Hispanic Male series, the brainchild of Joe Sendembach, who left the Border Patrol to join the USPS as an artist and rose to Director of Creative Services.
“It honors the way us veterans of the MIGRA-Industrial Complex feel about the Hispanic male,” according to Sendembach.
“We plan other cultural stamps along these lines, including a Drug Mule series,” Sendembach wrote in a press release distributed this morning.

POCHO History 101: Actual European ‘discoveries’ in one handy map

All that stuff they teach in history about Europe’s so-called Age of Discovery turns out to be Eurocentric racist mythmaking, once you subtract places that couldn’t be “discovered” because there were already humans living there.

Is it too late for Mother Earth? Is there ‘Espero?’ (Esperanto video)
You may not even need the English subtitles to understand this short Esperanto-language animation from England, but here’s a cheat sheet: Mother Earth AKA Gaia seems to be doing fine until Humanity comes along. Is her decline inevitable, or is there Espero?

Your basic futuristic Pre-Columbian animation from Israel (video)
From Israel comes this tale of a little girl in a “futuristic Pre-Columbian tribe” where everyone wears a mask. When the girl reaches the age of maturity, she’ll get a mask herself and she understands that accepting the mask will make her one of the tribe. Also involved: Carlos Castandeda’s Don Juan, abstract electronic music, high-speed rail, totem poles, pyramids, tunnels, skyscrapers, the Great Wall of China and iPads (could be Androids, hard to tell.) Mas Que La Cara , according to creator Yaniv Cohen, a college student, is from the Spanish and means “more than the face” or “added face.” It’s also the root of the word “masque.”
The map is not the territory — or is it? (toons)
We’ve already run maps seeking to explain such mysteries as Texas and Florida. But now for something completely different via our friends at Wired.com. Well semi-different. Actually not that different from the Texas map but instructive, nevertheless. It’s a map [click to enlarge] of Los United Estates, from Yanko Tsvetkov’s Atlas of Prejudice. Look right to you?
And here’s Tsetkov’s map of the world according to Americans [click to enlarge]:
