(PNS reporting from SAN MARCOS, TX) Seventeen-year-old San Marcos High School senior Byron Chavez called someone’s mother a “wetback” in a comment on a Facebook photo yesterday — Mothers Day.
Chavez, the grandson of Mexican immigrants, used the W-word in response to a widely-circulated picture of a young woman at an immigration reform rally holding a sign reading “Fuck Weed. Legalize My Mom.”
Chavez posted “Fuck your wetback mom! Legalize Weed!” 30 minutes after his cousin Lauren Saucedo posted the image on her timeline .
“I was taken aback by his comment,” Saucedo emailed PNS. “Our grandparents were immigrants who came from Mexico looking for a better future.”
Saucedo, a college sophomore at the University of Texas campus here, said “That branch of the Chavez family has no historical recollection of the suffering endured by previous generations.”
Some of Saucedo’s Facebook friends chastised Chavez, calling him a “brown coconut pendejo” and “self-hating vendido.”
A few, however, defended Chavez. Yannette Rocha wrote:
We should legalize weed first because that’ll help our economy, the immigration is second. I mean why would you want to spend more in tax dollars than a economy boost? The cannabis legalization would actually make more jobs for illegals because there would be more shops and farms made. Shit I would own a hemp/cannabis farm.
Chavez remained adamant. “Fuck your mom legalizing her only hurts our economy unlike weed” he replied, and “It’s all about the kush.”
Saucedo pondered “unfriending” her cousin by decided otherwise. “He needs to be exposed to things, so I’m going to spam his timeline with progressive postings and anti-Dallas Cowboys propaganda. ”
