Hollywood Casting History: The ‘Latina Bombshell’ (toons)

disgustmeTime and again I have tipped my sombrero to the remarkable treasures to be found at Pappy’s Golden Age Comics Blogzine, but now he has outdone himself with a post that gibes/gels/fuses with my #textmex and #mextasy researches/art/presentations and more.

One of his latest entries is a comic book from 1951 that fictionalizes the life and times of Lupe Velez — the “Mexican Spitfire” at the heart of my research in Myra Mendible’s From Bananas to Buttocks and in my own Tex[t]-Mex: Seductive Hallucinations of the “Mexican” in America {(Quality Comics’ Love Secrets #41 (1941), reprinted from Love Confessions #9 (1951)}

Hollywood producer’s Twitter feed highlights sexism in scripts

janeinthemoviesrossputmanFilm producer Ross Putman’s new Twitter feed @FemScriptIntros shares the lines from film scripts where female characters are introduced. To protect the innocent(?), Putman has changed all their names to JANE. The excerpts speak volumes about how “The Industry” thinks about women. Unlike all the women, it’s not a pretty picture.

Here is his Twitter feed in real time:

A funny thing happened on the way to ‘Bordertown’

BordertownBarracudaEPNHola. I’m Lalo Alcaraz. You might know me.

I have been a Chicano political cartoonist forever. I know, I know, it’s God’s work, you’re welcome. Now, all of a sudden I’m a primetime TV writer and producer. Huh? Yes, the last two years in my life have been a super WTF. With ten percent LOL. #facepalm

Like it or not, I am now part of a historic pop culture moment: the first season of the first animated primetime TV show featuring a large cast of Mexican and Mexican-American characters: Bordertown.

Alternate Reality Theatre: If big hit TV shows weren’t all white (toons)

xfilesIn a new online gallery, Bay Area artist and DREAMer Julio Salgado reimagines some all-time TV favorites with people of color, like this screencap from an imaginary Equis Files.

“Fox Mulder and Dana Scully,” he writes, “come back in the forms of a former Black Panther and Brown Beret who investigate forgotten files that kept tabs on POC activists.”

He explains on Facebook:

By now you’re probably familiar with our latest racist media frenzy centered on remarks Kelly Osbourne made on The View, a response to the incredibly racist Donald Trump.

But she sounded just as racist.

My report and photos from the set of Adam Sandler’s ‘Ridiculous Six’

cate2f

I had to post this after reading that the actors who walked off Adam Sandler’s Ridiculous Six set get tagged as heroes and those who stayed, like me, get belittled.

My photograph (above) shows two of the men who walked off and the lady who stayed. They’re discussing the film’s infamous script, just after they talked to one of the assistant directors about the script.

Just before he leaves, the man on the right attempts to gather as many of the 100-plus extras into a holding tent like the one pictured (below).
