Saddest song ever! Lalo Guerrero sings “There’s No Tortillas” (video)
The great Lalo Guerrero can hardly sing for all the weeping as he performs There’s No Tortillas. And who can blame him?
Here’s our favorite (non parody) Lalo Guerrero song — he calls it a “boogie woogie jitterbug”:

Enjoy ‘Mexican Crazy Bread’ at the Doha, Qatar Marriott (video)
You can make Mexican Crazy Bread yourself, whatever it is, just like in this “street food” recipe video, or stop by the Doha Marriott Hotel any Thursday for #DIYStreetFoodDoha. The hotel is located on Ras Abu Aboud Street, Building 2, Street 920, Zone 28, Doha. It’s unclear if the Marriott makes their Mexican bread with any leftover chicken, really. Crazy not included.
Coloring book from El Rey Del Art: Frida bot, taco dreams, luchador
The Big Fancy Coloring Book offers something special for odd grownups, peculiar kids, and lovers of absurd drawings of tacos, Frida Kahlo and/or Chiquita Banana and/or Carmen Miranda, luchadores and armadillos. It’s the latest creative product from our mysterious amigo, The Painter of Arizona Light, whose Internet spokespern is known as El Rey Del Art (so-called self portrait, above).
We’ve secured especial permission to share four of El Rey’s droppings here:

Valentine’s Day love song to a ‘Queen’ – with sousaphone (music video)
Chilean-American rapper Dazer teams up with Erin Kim — a contestant on NBC’s The Voice — for a multicultural love song to a Queen. We especially dig Grindz on sousaphone, a marching band tuba that wraps around the body. And check out MacArthur Park in the background where they left that cake out in the rain.

Food Fight! Fan de la Cultura vs gigantic ‘machetes’ in DF (video)
Fan de la Cultura is a macho vato, but can he handle los machetes? These two-foot-long quesadillas are filled with a pound-and-a-half of carne de res and chorizo and different quesos and pollos and guisados and jamon and chicharrones and frijoles, well you get the picture. We looked it up on the Google: That’s 24 oz of stuff per machete. Will our hero be the first person since 1964 to eat three of these beasts in one sitting at Los Machetes Amparo in Mexico D.F.? More math: Three machetes at 1.5 pounds each equals 4.5 pounds total, or 72 ounces. ¡Buen provecho, Fan de la Cultura!
Cookie Monster vs Mazzy Star: ‘Fade Into You’ (3 music videos)
In 2009, according to Dangerous Minds, weirdo singer Catman Cohen recorded an idiosyncratic version of Mazzy Star’s 1993 Fade Into You. Later that same year, according to those very same minds, the Internets mashed up Cohen’s vocal with Cookie Monster Sesame Street footage.
Contrast and compare with this video of the original version, sung here live on Conan, by our girlfriend, the most distinctive voice in pop music, the East Los Angel, to know her is to love her, ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the amazing star of Mazzy Star, Hope Sandoval:

In Paris, it’s #1PHOTOPOUR1TACO @ the Old El Paso taco truck (videos)

The French arm of Old El Paso, the Tex-Mex style food people, asked ad agency Rosbeef! to generate buzz for their new premium Restaurante brand around late Paris last year.
Rosbeef! (Slogan: We’re creative and we have common sense; how cool is that!?) came up with a marketing combo plate of an Old El Paso Restaurante taco truck, taco selfies and the hashtag #1PHOTOPOUR1TACO. Share a photo with the hashtag, they said, and get a free taco made with El Paso stuff and a digital coupon to buy El Paso products at the market. ¡Que rico! Ooh la la tambien aussi!

Old School/New School/Antiguo Paradigma/Nuevo Paradigma (toon)
Out with the old paradigms, in with the new.
It is not our responsibility to finish the work of perfecting the world, but we are not free to desist from it either. [Click on the image to enlarge.]

This is my new motto: ‘WWND? What would nana do?’
While advances in technology make some areas of our lives easier, good old-fashioned child rearing has become more complicated.
In our grandparent’s day, it was a simpler time. They didn’t have the luxury of worrying about play dates and preschool applications.
I have a motto that has become a guiding principle for applying “old school” methods to present day parenting.
What would nana do?
I’m barely awake, preparing breakfast while holding the baby, trying to sip on day old coffee when my toddler asks me to cut her bread into shapes.
WWND? In nana’s day, a square slice was the only shape you were going to get.
It’s 4:30 pm, the witching hour. Despite the baby screaming all day, I’ve proudly set the table and prepared a healthy dinner. My toddler takes one look at her plate and breaks down in tears because she wants ice cream for dinner.

Gene genie: Mexico is happier than the average bear because science
Why are Mexicans happier than the average bear?
It’s in their genes, according to a new scientific paper, which asserts that nations with the highest prevalence of the A allele also perceive themselves happiest — countries like Ghana and Nigeria in West Africa, and northern Latin American nations like Mexico and Columbia.
