I guess we’re not in those cotton fields back home anymore! (video)

It’s a biopic! It’s history! It’s a music video!

It’s long and complicated, so we’ll let them explain:

Algodón y V.I.N.O. is a music video written and directed by Jeremiah Joe Ocañas that follows a 12-year-old boy’s days of working in the cotton fields of Danevang, TX, to following his dream of moving to California and today, while living that dream in the mural adorned Highland Park, he reminisces on the journey as an adult.

Recent UFO/OVNI videos put (alien hotspot?) Colombia on edge

Recent eyewitness reports, still photos and videos of UFO/OVNIs over Colombia have some observers wondering if this South American country is a top space alien tourist destination while other, more skeptical, observers cry “shenanigans!”

Open Minds TV reports:

The media has picked up on a few alleged UFO videos from Colombia, prompting some to ask whether it is a new UFO hotspot. Many of the facts regarding the videos have been misreported by UFO websites, causing confusion and dubious conclusions on their part. Furthermore, some researchers think the objects in the videos are likely very terrestrial in origin.

I killed that African-American kid in self defense (1876 toon)

InSelfDefense12w
This editorial cartoon, In Self-Defense, by cartoonist A. B. Frost, ran in Harper’s Weekly on October 28, 1876, on page 880.

The HarpWeek blog explains:

This image dramatically condemns the brutal racism of some white Southerners against blacks. The white man has killed a black child, and his plea of “self-defense” exemplifies the perspective among Southern whites that Reconstruction had led to “black rule.” The cartoon appeared just a few weeks before the presidential election.

PETA: Quinoa vs chia cartel wars hurt Fido, Fluffy over Christmas

fidofluffy2(PNS reporting from AUSTIN) Fido and Fluffy have become collateral damage in the war between the rival QuinoaTraficante and ChiaTraficante agricultural cartels.

Recent attacks on Mexican chia seed production — apparently at the hands of rival-cartel-affiliated quinoa growers — have left thousands of local seed-deprived Chia Pets cold, shivering and hairless this Yuletide season, Texas People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) told PNS.

PETA said this includes Fido and Fluffy, of Barton Creek, pictured (above) in the organization’s latest Web ad.

Accusations, controversy doom first Spanglish grammar conference

spanglishconf
(PNS reporting from RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA) Factional fighting among Spanglish speakers, academics, and Raza activists doomed the first Spanglish grammar conference, held here Sunday.

“The idea was to create some foundational principles and ground rules for our people’s language,” co-organizer Lourdes Cervantes-Borges of the Professional Organization of Chican@s Oppressed by Society (POCHOS) told PNS. “We wished merely to memorialize those rules in a book of proper Spanglish Style, a Estronque y Blanco if you will, but then these know-nada nacos had to get involved.”

“No manches, son puras pendejadas! I ain’t down with all of that academic bullshit,” countered East Los delegate-at-large Oscar “Mocoso” Chavez. “Nuestra lengua is from the streets, and I ain’t talking ’bout that chingon taco troka on the corner of Beverly Boulevard.”

Ricardo Caté’s ‘Without Reservations’: I can’t breathe (toon)

ICantBreatheRicardoCateNative cartoonist Ricardo Caté of the Kewa Pueblo is a friend of POCHO and the author of the hilarious non-PC comic strip Without Reservations, which runs in the Santa Fe New Mexican and soon all over Turtle Island, from beak to tail.

Here one of his characters sports an “I Can’t Breathe” tshirt in support of Eric Garner. In case you didn’t already know, the next most disproportionately killed-by-police group behind African-Americans is Native Americans.

White Americans are biased against blacks, and some more than others

biasmapMost white Americans are biased against blacks, but it differs across the country. In this map, the redder the state, the higher the hate. Michigan, in gray, is in middle, bias-wise, and the bluer states are less biased than Michigan.

There’s some tricky methodology involved, and there may be some “selection bias,” but if anything, the survey results may underestimate the prejudice.
