In the midst of so much inequality: Ode to the Class of 2017

Delivered to graduating seniors and their families at Pomona College’s Class Day

It’s great to be here today
to recognize you all in this way
I want to be here fully in celebration
but I can’t without first naming some realizations
I offer these reflections
with all humility
in the lessons you’ve taught me, class of 2017
Please know, I didn’t set out to rhyme
that’s just how the words flowed this time
The severity of the issues remain
I just speak them with little academic refrain

Speedy-bi Speedy-bo, die schnellste Maus von Mexiko! (lyrics, videos)

With Germany’s Angela Merkel the new leader of the “Free World,” we thought it was time to brush up on our German, so we asked Mexico’s Fastest Mouse, Speedy Gonzales, for help. Take it away, Speedy el Maus!

I have been awaiting Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” all my life

The CNN season premiere April 30  was a watershed moment for Chicanos and Mexican Americans.

Here’s what I Tweeted the night I saw it:

L.A. OGs WAR (the ORIGINAL band): ‘Cinco de Mayo’ (1981 complete)

warcinco
This 1981 single from WAR was the first time many non-Latinos heard of Cinco de Mayo. This photo shows the original guys at the Sunset Grill (7439 Sunset, next to their offices (Far Out Productions) at 7417 Sunset. The Guitar Center swallowed up 7417 a while back.

L-R: Charles Miller (sax, RIP), Lonnie Jordan (keyboards, the only original member in the new so-called WAR), Howard Scott (guitar, Lowrider Band), Harold Brown (drums, Lowrider Band), BB Dickerson (bass, Lowrider Band), Lee Oskar (harmonica, Lowrider Band). Not pictured, Papa Dee (RIP, percussion).

[DISCLOSURE: I was WAR’s National Director of Album Promotion for a while and ate so often at the Sunset Grill (like in the Eagles song) I could run a tab.]

Tia Lencha’s Cocina: Cinco de Mayo fruity virgin Micheladas for ju

Hola! Is Tia Lencha here.

tiacincoI going to help ju make a new drink for Cinco de Mayo. Is fruity and a virgin. Ju know, with no beers. Get jur mind out of the trash can, cochinos!

I think of the new drink when mijo ask me to taste my watermelons michelada. I think to myself, what if he like it? Will he want to drink beers? I don’t want him to be like mijo’s daddy who drink beers and fall asleep in the tub with his chonies wet with his own pee pee (thas urine for ju pochos). So I make mijo a drink, one that is virgin, and he taste it and he like it, and I taste it and I like it.
