WAR (the original band): ‘Cinco de Mayo’ (1981 complete)
This 1981 single from WAR was the first time many non-Latinos heard of Cinco de Mayo. This photo shows the original guys at the Sunset Grill (7439 Sunset, next to their offices (Far Out Productions) at 7417 Sunset. The Guitar Center swallowed up 7417 a while back.
L-R: Charles Miller (sax, RIP), Lonnie Jordan (keyboards, the only original member in the new so-called WAR), Howard Scott (guitar, Lowrider Band), Harold Brown (drums, Lowrider Band), BB Dickerson (bass, Lowrider Band), Lee Oskar (harmonica, Lowrider Band). Not pictured, Papa Dee (RIP, percussion).
[DISCLOSURE: I was WAR’s National Director of Album Promotion for a while and ate so often at the Sunset Grill (like in the Eagles song) I had credit.]

My report and photos from the set of Adam Sandler’s ‘Ridiculous Six’
I had to post this after reading that the actors who walked off Adam Sandler’s Ridiculous Six set get tagged as heroes and those who stayed, like me, get belittled.
My photograph (above) shows two of the men who walked off and the lady who stayed. They’re discussing the film’s infamous script, just after they talked to one of the assistant directors about the script.

Latinos, at least according to the mainstream media (video)
Mainstream media is full of Latinos — Latino criminals, Latina maids and exotic Latino sex machines. Ordinary people just like you? Not so much. [Video by David Viramontes.]

Diversity sells, but Hollywood is overwhelmingly white, male (audio)
“If you want an accurate picture of ethnic and gender diversity in the United States, don’t look to Hollywood,” says NPR.
That’s the conclusion of the “2015 Hollywood Diversity Report” conducted by the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA.
The report quantifies the striking — if not surprising — racial and gender imbalances in film and television, both behind and in front of the camera, by comparing the representation of minorities to their actual proportions of the population.
“At every level, in every arena, women and minorities are under-represented in the industry,” says Darnell Hunt, the study’s co-author and director of the Bunche Center. “And the only question really is how serious, how egregious that level of under-representation is.”

Cinema sweetie Raquel Torres stole Groucho’s heart (photos, video)
In the 1933 Marx Brothers classic Duck Soup, Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) is introduced to the fetching Vera Macal (Raquel Torres), “a famous dancer.” “I could dance with you ’til the cows come home,” Groucho tells her. “On second thought, I’d rather dance with the cows ’til you come home!”

Pocho Ocho top reasons not to watch the Oscars
Lot of pochos we know are insisting they won’t watch Sunday’s telecast of the Academy Awards. The big reason, of course, is Hollywood’s apparent inability to find roles for Latin@s other than maid or gangster (see infographic below).
But that’s not all! Here are the Pocho Ocho Top reasons they’re boycotting the Oscars:
8. Reading chingon first edition of The Iliad instead.
7. Machete don’t sext.
6. Six-hour MEChA meeting starts at the same time.

Does your animation project need a Latina maid?

Does your video animation project need stereotyped cartoon actors?
How about a Latina?
How about we name her “Maria,” oh, and get this, she’s a “housemaid!”
Maria is ready to say “¡Si, Señora!” in all your corporate video, web avatar and/or white privileged productions.
Sure we could have made Maria the “cool girl” character (above), but get real.
This is America!

My friend’s new movie, ‘The Book of Life,’ is lush, hilarious (photos)
The Book of Life opens today in theaters nationwide. This lush and hilarious Day of the Dead-inspired movie is by my friend Jorge Gutierrez and film giant Guillermo del Toro.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to the flick’s “red carpet” premiere Sunday, and I had the time of my life. It was a “bucket list” experience, and I want to share some of the images and sounds from that morning of movie madness.
Highlights included photobombing the stars, taking a selfie with Diego Luna, and making Ice Cube snarl.

Lalo spoke to National Public Radio’s national reporter Mandalit del Barco after the film.
Check out this brilliant report that explains the origins of the pelicula and features writer and director Jorge Gutierrez, executive producer Guillermo del Toro and Lalo at the end, talking about the whole Disney/Pixar Day of the Dead trademark flap.
