Los Cenzontles: We’re up and down, like a swing ‘El Columpio’ (video)

Los Cenzontles (the Mockingbirds) offer up the traditional ranchera El Columpio. Life, they lament, is up and down, back and forth, like a seesaw or a swing. Lucina Rodriguez and Fabiola Trujillo sing accompanied by Eugene Rodriguez and Emiliano Rodriguez. Video by Tudor Stanley.

You can like this 2012 Cuban a capella ‘Hotel California’ video now

In case you missed it: This is a clip from a 2012 concert that’s been online for over two years and it’s suddenly popular all over again. We think Cuban a capella group Vocal Sampling does a great version of the Eagle’s Hotel California. We’re also pumped it’s finally OK to like Cuba and Cubans and Cuban musicians now. Unless you’re Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio, of course.

Cibelle is a punk from the suburbs: ‘Punk da Periferia’ (video)

Thank God for the Internets and Citizen Uploaders like Scott LaFramenta, who has added English subtitles to the Portuguese stylings of Brazilian-Briton Cibelle and her performance of Gilberto Gil’s Punk da Periferia — punk from the suburbs.

Now it all makes sense! Here’s a recent video of Gil performing the same tune live.

Los Mariachi: A song for ‘Señorita’ (#TBT music video)

losmariachisenoritaThis relatively unknown 2011 (or 2013?) video from Mexican rockers Los Mariachi just re-appeared on Vimeo with much better video and audio than the YouTube original and we’re glad it did. Señorita features the band’s awesome sweet Mexican metal – they got the action, they got the motion, yeah, the boys can play! That’s Ian Alvarez on soulful vocals, Carlos Casquejo shredding on the guitar, Ruben Balagot pumping it out on bass, Eddie Perez playing lyrical keyboards, and JamJam Emmanuel hitting hard on drums. Firme rock!

Happy May Day from the Workers of the World (music video, lyrics)

maydaybigEnjoy the Internacional, the world-wide (Get it? It’s international!) anthem of those red commie cabrones in Cuba and Venezuela and China and North Korea (and lurking in secretive cells everywhere else but the lamestream media sheeple won’t tell you that).

Tomorrow, May 1, is May Day AKA International Workers’ Day, when the communist comrades sing this stirring appeal, with its hummable melody and a vague vision of a better future that’s hard to disagree with, except maybe the LUCHA FINAL aspect.

HOW IS THIS APPROPRIATE? Frank Zappa: You are what you is (video)

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention tested the limits of free expression and racial taboos in this 1984 music video for You Are What You Is. The hippie-light-show-solarized extravaganza features a harmonica-playing Ronald Reagan, dancing African “natives,” scantily-clad ladies (sexy nurse? sexy stewardess?) and the N-word. It’s all inappropriate and it’s offensive and rude. It’s nothing but things nice people don’t say. And it’s all true. We’ve got lyrics:

Do you know what you are?
You are what you is
You is what you am
(A cow don’t make ham…)
You ain’t what you’re not
So see what you got
You are what you is
An’ that’s all it ’tis

El Bob Dylan en Estilo Norteño: ‘It Must Be Santa’ (music video)

Who’s got a beard that’s long and white?
Santa’s got a beard that’s long and white
Who comes around on a special night?
Santa comes around on a special night
Special night, beard that’s white
Must be Santa, must be Santa
Must be Santa, Santa Claus

[Listen closely as Bob Dylan lists Santa’s eight reindeer — names not in the official lyrics: “Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon; Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton”.]

Mad as Hell Mariachi El Bronx has a brand ‘New Beat’ (lyrics video)

Pocholandia homies Mariachi El Bronx are mad as Hell and are not gonna take this anymore. There’s a New Beat in town, tu sabes. Advanced music appreciators — please correct us if we’re wrong, but we think the New Beat is in 7/4 and 3/4 and 6/8 and 12/8 time, but “it’s complicated.”

This newly-released “audio-only” video for MEB’s Everything Twice is pretty good, too, maybe even better, actually it’s lots better. It has a great beat (only one!) and it’s easy to dance to. If we were still alive and still a radio DJ, we’d play this “B-side” instead:

Ritchie Valens birthday tribute: Cutty Flam does ‘Donna’ (video)

Ritchie Valens, 1950s Pacoima pocho teenage idol, would have been 73 years old today, except for that day the music died. Cutty Flam, the alt.rock.band from your black-and-white-retro future, made this video tribute, performing Ritchie’s hit Donna.

It’s one of a series of Valens tribute videos, as EddieG explains:

May 1 is May Day AKA International Workers’ Day. Today the communist comrades sing this stirring appeal, with its hummable melody and a vague vision of a better future that’s hard to disagree with, except maybe the LUCHA FINAL aspect.

Yet even as they sing this Kommie Kumbaya, the Marxist minions are locking millions up arbitrarily, invading foreign countries, spying on their fellow citizens and — we’ve read reports — killing innocent civilians by remote control. Oh, wait.

Retro rockers Cutty Flam go to the prom: ‘Robot Heart’ (video)

Suburban band Cutty Flam, the Rock n’ Roll sound track to a 1950’s B-Movie starring Ritchie Valens opposite Betty Page directed by Quentin Tarantino, offer this new video for Robot Heart. It’s about life, loss, death and going to the prom, plus it’s easy to slow-dance to. (Video by Jose Emmanuel Varela for BrotherScienceTV and Cutty Flam.)
