FDR died before he could deliver on his ‘Second Bill of Rights’ (videos)
On January 11, 1944, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised the country a Second Bill of Rights when World War II was over, but he died before the conflict ended.
America’s future security, he said, demands citizens have a right to good housing, good healthcare, good education, a living wage and more.
POCHO FACTOID: FDR never used the word “bigly” in a speech.
Transcript of his “Fireside Chat”:

That time Woody Guthrie wrote a song about the Trumps (videos)
In December 1950, Woody Guthrie moved into the Beach Haven Apartments in Brooklyn. His landlord was Fred Trump, father of Donald. Trump’s greed and racism inspired Guthrie to write Old Man Trump.
Ryan Harvey updated that song, and made this video with Ani DiFranco and Tom Morello (RATM).
Here are the lyrics:

Actual Pulp Fiction: Searching for Aztec gold treasure (1905 toon)
Here’s the cover of an actual pulp fiction novelette from 1905 featuring detectives searching for the storied Aztec gold. These paperback books were printed on the cheapest paper (pulp, like newsprint) and reflected the culture of the day. Note the Raiders of the Lost Ark style booby trap.

The San Patricio Batallón: Aztlan’s Irish heroes (4 music videos)
🇲🇽 ❤️ 🇮🇪
This corrido by Orange County Celtic-rock homies The Fenians tells the tragic story of the San Patricios, the St. Patrick’s Battalion.
The unit of 200 mostly Catholic Irish immigrants deserted the United States Army and fought with the Mexican Army against the U.S.A. in the Mexican–American War.
Scots-British post-punk The Wakes Band offer their version of the story next. The video’s not much to look at but the lyrics are killer, so read along below:

Fake News Video: One Pot Cooking for Men: ‘Rosarito Beach Tacos’
FAKE NEWS! We don’t think this is how they make tacos in Baja’s Rosarito Beach. And while there may be just one pot in the headline, there is also a pan in the video. ALTERNATIVE FACTS? We also notice a distinct lack of
- Salsa
- Cebolla
- Cilantro.
Ground turkey? K what? And where did the beans come from? SOMEONE ELSE’S POT?

Philly’s Frankford section still isn’t heaven, but it has tacos! (videos)
In the late 1960s, Philadelphia band The American Dream had a local hit with a novelty song about public transportation and the North Philly neighborhood of Frankford.
You Can’t Get to Heaven on the Frankford El,” they sang, “because the Frankford El goes straight to Frankford.” As a refugee from Philly living in LaLa Land since the late 1970s, that was the last time I thought about Frankford, until I found this new video about a taco truck bringing some cool comida to the hood.
