‘Far Alamo’ is the epic battle they never taught you in school (video)

Alien invaders tried to mess with the gringos at the Alamo in 1836, but they didn’t count on brave defenders Laurence Harvey, John Wayne, Richard Widmark, Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, James Coburn, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Terence Hill, Steve McQueen, Gian Maria Volonte, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach. Far Alamo documents the epic battle they never taught you in school.

What is it? UFO/OVNI photo’d over San Antonio high school (photos)

78312_submitter_file3__imageHave the Space Brothers come to straighten out a screwed-up America and an especially messed-up Lone Star State? Were they here Monday?

Photos submitted to MUFON sure show something strange in the skies over a San Antonio high school named after the racist traitor Robert E. Lee. [All photos are minimized on this page. Click on an image to biggify.]

Here’s what the eyewitness/photographer reported to the Mutual UFO Network, and all of his photos:

The Krayolas election-inspired ranchera: Piñata Trump (video)

San Antonio’s The Krayolas — known to their screaming fans as THE TEX-MEX BEATLES — crank up the accordion, tuba, and more cowbell for the ranchera-style Piñata Trump.

Santiago Jimenez Jr. (Flaco Jimenez’s younger brother) guest stars on button accordion.

Vanessa Del Fierro is a coyote on a ‘Mexican Train’ (music video)

vanessahatSan Antonio sensation Vanessa Del Fierro is the alt.mariachi chingona behind Las Coronelas, whose mega-viral David Bowie cover almost blew up POCHO’s servers this week.

Vanessa also stars as an immigrant-smuggling coyote in a new video for her original composition Mexican Train. It’s a love song; too bad she’s in love with the wrong vato. Extra firme oldies points for the doo-wop backup girls, the triplets feel, and the tubular bells:

Mariachi Las Coronelas: Bowie’s “As The World Falls Down” (video, lyrics)

David Bowie was an inspirational artistic entity from the multiverse, creating musical ripples in the spacetime continuum and, thankfully, in South Texas as well.

Listen in as San Antonio’s all-women, category-breaking Mariachi Las Coronelas wins over a skeptical crowd in this stunning performance of Bowie’s As The World Falls Down. [Live club audio with video slideshow.]

There’s such a sad love
Deep in your eyes.
A kind of pale jewel
Open and closed
Within your eyes.
I’ll place the sky
Within your eyes.

Those Taiwanese animators recap the Spurs’ NBA victory (video)

Maybe you didn’t see the San Antonio Spurs smoke the Miami Heat 104-87 for the NBA crown Sunday night, or maybe you want to relive the glory. Those wacky Taiwanese animators at TomoNews are here to help.

RIP Jesus ‘Chucho’ Perales, Chicano rock pioneer (video)

chucoyoungJesus “Chucho” Perales, a founding member and guitarist with Mando & the Chili Peppers, a band considered to be among the very first of the Chicano rock ‘n’ rollers in the mid-1950s, died Sunday. He was 78.

My San Antonio writes:

The Chili Peppers were the first Mexican-American group to appear on American Bandstand. The group toured the country, played Las Vegas and performed with Ritchie Valens, the Champs and Duane Eddy. The band’s album, On the Road with Rock N Roll, recorded in 1958, is a collector’s item.

He received his first guitar, a Gene Autry model, when he was 8 from Alfred Flores Sr., owner of Alamo Music. By 14, Perales was playing rough joints with pioneering conjunto musician Valerio Longoria.

Jesus “Chucho” Perales was born on Christmas Day 1935.

George Jones swings ‘Boogie Woogie Mexican Boy’ (video)

The late country music superstar George Jones wrote and sang quite a few standout songs. Boogie Woogie Mexican Boy (AKA Mexican Boogie) may not be among them. On the other hand, how many tunes do you know about a Mexican boy the girls like because he has “great big feet?” And how exactly did he cross the border into San Antone?

He was just a lad, not too old
Always lived in Mexico
And every day in the hot sunshine
He would dance and sing just to pass the time.

Dancin’, prancin’ up the street
Not even takin’ time to eat
This little boy with the great big feet
Doing the boogie with the Mexican beat.

Cuban Reds say Raul Castro-Obama handshake betrayed Revolution

(PNS reporting from HAVANA) El Presidente Comrade Raul Castro’s handshake with imperialist war criminal Barack Obama at the Nelson Mandela memorial service in South Africa was a slap in the face of the workers of the world and a betrayal of Cuba’s Communist Revolution, an old school Communist Bay of Pigs veteran charged Tuesday.

“That handshake marks a Day That Will Live in Infamy,” Ernesto “Little Che” Altacaca, 76, told everyone hanging out at People’s Barbershop #245 on Calle de Los Cadres. “It is like the Hitler-Stalin nonaggression pact (photo, below) combined with a very special episode of Chico and the Man.

“Did El Presidente demand the Yanqui perro return Guantanamo?” the long-time area resident asked. “No! Did he demand an end to the embargo that has penalized the people for half a century? Nyet! Did he insist Obama recognize the workers’ rights to self determination without capitalist exploitation and immediately send six dozen complete gasket sets for 1954 Chrysler New Yorkers? No way! And what about Pete Seeger remitting that record business royalty money for the song he stole from the poor people of Guantanamera?”

Texas reacts to mariachi kid anthem racism: ‘We can do better!’

(PNS reporting from SAN ANTONIO) Some Texans are ashamed of last night’s racist online reaction to 10-year-old mariachi singer Sebastien de la Cruz’s performance of The Star Spangled Banner at the NBA finals here.

“We can do better!” shouted one local activist at a hastily-called demonstration outside AT&T Center today.

“How can we expect more people to join our racist krusade if we persist in really sloppy spelling, inconsistent capitalization, confused subject-verb agreement and endless repetition of stale cliches?” said Stanley Merdkopf, president of the local chapter of Organized Racist Crackers for America (ORCA.)

Pocho of the Week: San Antonio Floater Albert Rios

Crack open a cold Bud Lite for San Antonio’s Albert Rios, our Pocho of the Week, to celebrate his positive attitude and preparedness to ride out this past weekend’s major flooding in style.  Rios, who was ready with raft, beer and river shoes when the waters hit, launched into the suburban river like a modern-day Tom Sawyer. Chances are, he was blasting Rush’s Tom Sawyer during his epic ride, which lasted half a block, just long enough to suck down that beer.

Stone Oak woman claims family spat was due to ‘pura envidia’

(PNS reporting from SAN ANTONIO) The recent loud family dispute at her home here was due to “pura envidia” on the part of her husband’s people, according to Adelia Lázaro.

“They are just envidiosos because we have worked hard to have this mock-Tudor home in Stone Oak closer to the north side than them,” the San Antonio native and mother of three told PNS.

“They just want what we have and can’t be happy for us!”
